Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle

The medieval Welsh castle in Caerphilly is to be the venue for a new Welsh-language production of Macbeth.

Caerphilly Castle is the setting for the site-specific production, which features Richard Lynch (Hollow Crown, Hinterland) in the title role. Ffion Dafis will take on the role of Lady Macbeth, her previous credits include Byw Celwydd. The production will also feature a community cast from the Caerphilly area.

Welsh-language theatre company Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru stage the piece, which was adapted from Shakespeare's original into Welsh by former national poet of Wales Gwyn Thomas before he died in April 2016.

The show will be broadcast to cinemas across Wales and is part of the Cadw 2017 Year of the Legends programme, which celebrates past and current Welsh legends.

Director Arwel Gruffydd said: " It's an honour to direct this splendid translation, the work of my former university professor at Bangor, and a fellow native of Blaenau Ffestiniog, Gwyn Thomas. We warmly present this production in his memory."

The production will be performed in Welsh with English translation available during all performances. The cinema broadcast will include English subtitles too.

Macbeth runs at Caerphilly Castle between 9 and 18 February with previews from 7 February.
